NFMC Participates in MTPS’s Summer Outdoor Learning Camp
NFMC’s Planning Forester, R.P.F, Alaina Vandervoort, and Public Relations and Marketing Coordinator, Brett Redden, were invited to provide an outdoor Plant and Tree I.D. session to Margaret Twomey Public School’s (MTPS) Summer Outdoor Learning Camp (ages 6 to 8).
The session was designed to help children identify trees by their leaves, twigs, and bark. They also learned about:
-Identifying other types of flora such as the lichen commonly called old man’s beard, which is abundant within our local forests.
-Tree Burls. Burls are a large, knobby growth on a tree trunk or branch, developed as a protective response to tree disease, and covered in bark.
-Tree Sap- watery, sugary liquid that circulates through a tree’s vascular system, carrying water, nutrients, and hormones. It’s essential for a tree’s health, providing the means for growth and development.
Why Is Tree Identification Important for Kids?
Tree identification for kids fosters a deeper connection with the environment.
Understanding trees helps children recognize different species, appreciate biodiversity, and learn about the ecosystem.
Here are a few reasons why tree identification holds significance for kids:
Develops Observation Skills: It encourages children to pay attention to details.
Promotes Environmental Awareness: Kids learn about the role trees play in nature and the importance of conservation.
Encourages Outdoor Activity: Identifying trees can turn a nature walk into an exciting adventure.
Thank you to Nicole Lowndes from MTPS, for inviting NFMC to be a part of this year’s summer camp. Hats off to MTPS camp teaching assistants. Special thanks to Holy Savior School, for permission to their trails for this forestry education initiative.
